This Week’s Purchase: Namco neGcon Controller + Games

negconThis week I purchased a rather strange looking device; the Namco neGcon controller. Characterised by the large swivel mechanism in its centre, this PlayStation accessory was originally created to allow for full analogue control in Namco’s console port of the game Ridge Racer. Today it can be used with a wide selection of classic PlayStation racers, and I’ll be taking a look at its functionality, as well as some of these titles, in full detail below.

Dracula’s Cave is making a game!

Orange Cube titleSo today I’ve got some news I’m really excited to share. Dracula’s Cave is making its first game, and it’s going to be called Orange Cube. I’m currently in the process of preparing material for the full reveal, but in the meantime I couldn’t resist making an initial announcement. Please look out for more information about Orange Cube in the upcoming weeks!

Review: Black Butler

Black ButlerCiel Phantomhive is thirteen years old. He’s the head of a noble family, runs a toy manufacturing company, and lives in a massive mansion. Oh, and he’s also got a demon for a butler. As you’d imagine, life is pretty great for Ciel. Well, aside from the dubious ‘contract’ he made with butler Sebastian, and the unfortunate murder of both his parents. Still, on the plus side he’s got an awesome butler with an awesome catchphrase. You see he’s simply…

Book Review: Console Wars: SEGA, Nintendo, and The Battle That Defined a Generation

titleIt’s 1990. Videogames are a $3 billion industry and Nintendo owns 90% of it. The other 10% is made up of wannabes that include SEGA, who in the next three years will transform themselves from obscurity into the market leader. This is the story of Console Wars, and Blake J Harris retells the greatest battle in videogame history in an exciting, detailed, and ever-so-slightly biased way.

This Week’s Purchase: SEGA Master System (plus additional SEGA items)

titleAnyone following DC may be vaguely aware of the evolution of my SEGA collection, and in the past I’ve documented both my Mega Drive and Dreamcast buying sprees. Alongside the Saturn my collection was nearing completion, and finally this week I turned my attention to the one console that was notably absent; the Master System.

10 Underrated Classics for the GameBoy Advance

starfy3Nintendo’s GameBoy Advance is a classic console. It has a strong library of both original games and SNES favourites. Mario is great, Zelda is great, and Metroid is great. But you probably already know this. Overall the system has less ‘hidden gems’ than others, largely down to the fact that its lifespan was cut short by the release of the Nintendo DS only three years later. However, there’s still some amazing titles that never got the recognition they deserve, and today I’ve picked out ten of my favourite.

The Worst Videogame Father Figures

booker_elizabethToday it’s Father’s Day in the United Kingdom. That means it’s a day about celebrating fathers, and of course, our virtual fathers too. Videogames provide many great lessons in the field of parenting, although admittedly this is usually in the form of what you shouldn’t be doing. Read on to see who I’ve singled out as some of the worst father figures in videogame history.

This Week’s Purchase: Orange GameBoy Advance (with Backlight) + Japanese Games

1This week I bought a first generation GameBoy Advance. This was a console I used to really like, but its unilluminated screen means that by today’s standards it’s just about impossible to see in pretty much any lighting condition. However, when I found a fix for the console’s Achilles heel, in the form of a custom installed backlit screen, I also rediscovered my love for Nintendo’s classic handheld.

Review: Persona 3: The Movie #1 Spring of Birth

Persona3I can’t have been the only person who watched Persona 4 The Animation and then saw this coming. I can’t have been the only one who, after finishing the highly enjoyable and faithful retelling of the Persona 4 story, thought that one day the same justice would be done to Persona 3. That one day we’d have a P3 anime that wasn’t Trinity Soul. Well, that day has finally arrived. The first Persona 3 movie is here.

Top 10 Futuristic Racing Videogames

F Zero X titleThe future is a wonderful place full of possibility, excitement, and crazy new inventions such as flying cars. For racing games it allows for new ideas, faster top speeds, crazy track designs, and vibrant atmospheres. I’ve always been surprised by how few videogames have really explored these compelling concepts, especially considering how most that have either resulted in wildly exciting series, or at least a couple of extremely fun titles. This is a top ten list from only a handful of games, but each is a truly awesome racer that any fan of the genre should have in their collection.
